21st January 2009, 10:09 AM
I had a conversation with Stuart Gray from Knockhill yesterday and he has asked me to invite all Mini Owners (new shape and classic) along to the Scottish Classic Speedfair. This year as most of you already know is the 50th Anniversary of the Classic Mini and to celebrate this Stuart is offering all Mini owners subsidized entry (as long as you are there by 10am), a designated parking area to show off your cars (I am looking to organize a best of show etc..) and a chance to go round the track with your own car at some point through the day (Not at speed sadly).
Please let me know if you can make it along it would be great to see the NMS well represented there .

Click here http://www.knockhill.com/events/event.php to see what else on. It doesn't show the Mini race but that looks like it is going to happen.:thumbs up:

Update Monday 13th July

We are being given an area to park/show of our cars. It is in the lower paddock overlooking the hairpin. I would suggest having the cars clean, but as this is a gravel area, I wouldn't suggest trying to make your car "concours". ;) We will be in this area with all the classic minis aswell. It has been requested that we are on-site and parked by 09:00hrs. I know this will mean an early start for some (myself included as I am travelling up from near Hawick), but I really do need you all on-site early. :thumbs up: There will be reduced entry for the MINI's (the exact details will be known shortly) :yes nod: We will be getting a parade lap round the circuit later on in the day.

There is going to be a bit of competition as Knockhill are doing a "Best in Show" for classic and New MINI. :yes nod::yes nod:

Update Wed 15th July

Ok Guys/Gals. Here is the important bit. :nag:

All MINI Drivers will get in Free before 09:30hrs.

All passengers in MINI's will be only £5 each before 09:30hrs

If you turn up after 09:30hrs, you WILL be charged full price for entry and will NOT get to park with all the other MINI's down near the hairpin.

I think we all have to say a BIG thank you to Mark Dryden for brokering this deal and also to Stuart Gray from Knockhill for agreeing to this Cracking Price :clap:

Put me down for this one, Mark. Went a couple of years back to see the 'Ecurie Ecosse' cars and the great Sir Jackie Stewart on track in his F1 Tyrrell - even got his autograph... proper Gent he was too! Great when your childhood heroes live up to the image. Had to get the Ecurie Ecosse badges on the MINI after that! I'm sure it'll be a worthwhile day.

LET'S PUT ON A DECENT SHOW OF MINIS!

It says track night is for classics only.
However the parade of 50 years will have to involve new minis.

Maybe could do with opening up the entry to MINI's, get more numbers

Hi folks, as Baptie says above, I could do with more entries for the tracknight.

It has been advertised to try and get a big number of Classic Minis, but unfortunately has not been as successful as I'd hoped.

I'm going to speak with Knockhill, and let those know that have signed up on the basis of classics only before I definitely open it up for MINIs aswell.
£50 for two hours on track @ Knockhill is very good value, at the moment it's going to be an expensive tracknight for me!

How many interested MINI owners are there?

Wont be able to do the tracknight after all as away in Belfast for a booz filled weekend the week before so pennies will be tight.

On a plus note if anyone needs trackday insurance I used these guys before and they were very reasonable in price.

I’ll be there in my Porsche, same as every year. I’ll see if I can persuade my better half to take her Mini along as well.

Nope, mine’s not so posh … it’s a 944 Turbo. Twenty years old and still feeling pretty modern!

Fits perfectly in our garage end-to-end with the Mini Cooper.

There’ll be plenty of Porsches at Knockhill if you fancy a look around. Both Scottish owners clubs are going along this year, instead of the usual one. I think your Mini collection is going to put us all to shame though, just like the Lotus owners did last year!

ianking
13th July 2009, 04:10 PM
Back in the day my Dad had a 944, not a turbo though but it was pretty cool, particularly as I was about 9 years old when he got it. I remember picking it up from Glen Henderson Porsche dealership in Edinburgh.

doubt we will get in to the show area as our cars are not classics "yet". reading the knockhill web site you have to submit an entry form for the show area.

Guys/Gals. I am still waiting on more info re this. I will be down on my hols in the borders from sat morning, so I will be travelling up via edinburgh to knockhill early on sunday morning ;) Not in the good books with Mrs D as she doesn't like an alarm clock on holiday...:frown:

I think the advice will be get in early, I had been told in the past that there would be an area designated for us to park in and "show" our cars. I don't expect this to change, but I suspect they will only give us so much room, but we do have a large number of cars going, so I hope they will kind to us.

Also I was told that there would be a parade lap for the MINI/minis at some point during the day.

I will give you more info as I have it. :thumbs up:

We will have another job on Sunday at the Speedfair. I don't know if any of you have been keeping up with the Calgary MINI Club thread, but it is their 50th Anniversary and obviously 50 years of MINI and they want us to get a pile of signatures on a flag that is due to arrive in Oban on Wed.

Also once we have got the signatures on there, Stephen (MINI Ecosse) is going to take the flag over to Mull and to Calgary Bay to get some photos of the flag there and with his MINI.

It would be great to get as many NMS signatures on the Flag as possible, so even if you can't make it to the Speedfair on Sunday, if you drop by my house after I have the flag you can sign it before I have to send it back to Oban. :thumbs up:

All MINI Drivers will get in Free before 09:30hrs.

All passengers in MINI's will be only £5 each before 09:30hrs

If you turn up after 09:30hrs, you WILL be charged full price for entry and will NOT get to park with all the other MINI's down near the hairpin.

Well there are 25 NMS cars, so if we drive the parade lap twice as fast as everybody else, that should do the trick! See y'all tomorrow, I've washed and dried the car, so it'll be raining. Set alarm for 6.00am... must be deranged. Oh, that's right - I AM.

The classic cars were fantastic, such a great number. i'll leave the tigers to my man above but will post some pics as im on my phone just now in the chinky. The fords were the stand out. The mk 1 escorts looked stunning.

Shame the show on the track was so late for the minis, thnik if we had got on around 12 it would have seen 100 on the track.

WOW what a long day managed a wee forty winks in the car though;)

Thought the turn out of all our Minis was great some shiny cars out there.

Ian King your Mini was looking top dollar from the crisp clean wheels to the top of the roof best I've seen a Mini detailed yet.

I really enjoyed the day have loads of pics once Allan has been through them all.

Got to say though it was a shame we didn't get to do the lap early.:frown::frown:

I enjoyed the walk to watch the rally that was just finishing but got to see cool classics along the way.
The vintage racing motors bikes were my fav I wish they had got longer to do laps much more entertaining than watching the Legends. (are they classics by the way)

Loved the old tractors, Lorries and bedford van:thumbs up:

Nice photos SAV. Enjoyed strolling along looking at all the great older cars - gets you thinking what you could do with a wad of 'spare' dosh and some garage space... Historic Racing was excellent - all the different makes and sounds - didn't that 260Z sound the business? And what about that classic 'Castrol R' smell? Takes me back that does! Loved the old bikes too. MINI racing was as close and entertaining as ever, and again a big thank you to Mark Dryden for arranging such a bargain day out for the NMS gang. Only gripe would be that the MINI/Mini clubs didn't get to do their 'parade laps' at the same time as the other clubs, as the combined numbers far outweighed any other make on the day. We left after the final MINI race, having said cheerio and ta to Mark - even at that stage it would still have been a while before we took to the track - and by that time a good few of 'our' cars had left (along with many spectators). IMHO the organisers missed a trick there as they could have had around 65+ (I didn't count) Minis from the 60's to the present day on track, and I'm sure the spectators would've enjoyed the time-spanning cavalcade. The 'Classics' were still there when we left, so maybe the were more keen to get their moment of glory!

Still, the lack of a parade certainly didn't waste the day for me, and I thought the NMS turnout did us proud with all those shiny machines. Nice to see everybody, usual suspects and new arrivals, and a special mention to Sioban and Malcolm for their 'Chuck Wagon' feeding station! RE. Sunburn: My entire 'napper' looks like a tomato with eyes painted on it and has absorbed about a gallon of 'after sun' since I got home - the perils of intermittent sunshine/cloud and hat-confusion... See you all soon.

ps. Bumble - I'll save you my next Snickers bar... unless I get the munchies again.

Terrific day today:D. Absolutely loved the banter all day:laugh:. Now I see what I'm missing when I'm crawling around the trackside taking piccies:sad:. Now I'm torn.

A huge thank you to Mark Dryden (AKA Shaft) and Stuart Gray for organising the location for the MINI's and for the hugely discounted entry.

It is a shame the parade for the MINI's was stuck at the ass-end of the day, but I guess "someone/thing" had to come last. Alas time was ticking away, stomaches were empty and after-sun cream was calling.

A wee question for everyone... how come if we spent almost the entire day with our back to the wind, dodging rain clouds and hiding under £4 umbrella's do I look like a plum tomato? Liberal coats of after sun and I'm still gonna have time putting my head on the pillow tonight.

All worth it though - great day!

Well done also to the SMCC drivers who (for the most part) managed to keep the cars on all four wheels and gave us a thrilling 30 laps. And a HUGE well done to Al Cameron (Owner of the Dominion Cinema in Edinburgh) who was Mark Dryden's trusty co-driver for the day.

I was at this event too. Popped in briefly to ask about brakes when I saw someone else running GTT Spiroslots.

During the Classic Parade at the end of the day, I was the R50 with the hood up and the RAC in attendance... Turned out the battery gave up for no apparent reason (didn't run it down with anything) and the car wouldn't start. Never did find out why the headlights would flash when I tried to start it... a bit odd, but I guess strange things can happen with a battery at the end of its life.

Great to see all the pictures. :thumbs up:

I am glad you all enjoyed the day. Good to see so many of you making the effort to show off your cars. I agree that Knockhill dropped the ball on not getting the Minis out at lunchtime:frown: I will pass on your thoughts.

Thanks to all the usual suspects for their support... in fact no.... thanks for all their piss taking about another Drive shaft popping :moonie:;). If it wasn't for the humour I would defo be in tears by now!!

:clap:A huge thank you to Chris Pearson for the use of his car. That saved us tip-toeing round another potential failure. What can I say Chris...Legend:clap::clap:

I thought we did well in the race to finish 5th considering the first time I had driven that car was straight out the pits after the driver change . You can't beat the feeling of complete uncertainty of a different car on different suspension combined with the fact that your belts are twisted and you are falling about inside the car trying to tighten the belts that can't get any tighter as they are now in complete knots . Combine that with a complete novice to racing cars in Al Cameron who took to the Minis very quickly and should be proud of his performance:clap:.

Thanks to all the guys at Mini Max yet again and I felt so sorry for Craig Noble who so nearly got out to play with the rest of us idiots!!

Well, I gave the Mini owners some applause as they were going round - though I admit I was blushing quite a bit at the time.

I think it was 6:45pm that they went around. I had to call the RAC out early as I had realised early on when I tried to move the MINI to a more prime spot that it wasn't starting. Knockhill staff had told me they were locking the carpark at 7:00pm, so couldn't wait until after the Mini parade.

It was nice seeing a lot of the classics there that day. I remember one very interesting one that was mid- or rear-engined and looked pretty quick. Who owned that one?
