Golf mark v 2.0 FSI. 150bhp 54Reg

My friendly car mechanic told me today that he would not change my timing belt as it is not due until 115,000 miles.

He said it would be safe up until 80-90,000 miles and claimed it would be a waste of money.

I thought it was due at 60,000 miles.

Can anyone clear this up for me?

Unless its a Chain and not a belt.

Alot of reference is made online that FSI engines have chains

Could it already have the belt changed and be the second one thats due at 115?

Ask on ukmkiv forum http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/default.aspx

...or it should be in the service booklet.

I have just checked the computer at work, it says it should be replaced at 115,000 miles or VW UK recommend every 4 years, whatever is soonest.

Hope this helps.

(it is a belt by the way, and takes about 2-2.5 hours to replace. I personally would recommend doing the water pump while you are in there too.)
