Folks,
If you experience or see a down turn in the site speed or spam messages being posted please notify me as soon as possible.

We are currently under quite a serious spam attack from a large quantity of spammers who seem hell bent on ruining our enjoyment :ragin:

I am doing everything i can at the moment to combat this threat :thumbs up:

Thanks

Sounds a bit iffy doesn't it. lol. As for the IP and email address.... I could give you it, but it wouldn't be right. lol.

Him (or her) have been deleted along with a bundle of other non-legit registrations this evening. For the avoidance of doubt, although you see their name as a registered user, they only get registered far enough to log their details with the site. They CAN NOT view any forums or post to any forums without either Alan, Craig or I physically allowing their registration.

There's no doubt this threat continues, we're doing our best to stop it in it's tracks and you should all be able to carry on using the site without hindrance.;)

Thanks to Andy and Craig for their help in maintaining some kind of normality within the forums :thumbs up:
Sadly, i'm having to take the drastic action of shutting off registrations when the site isn't manned by any mods or admin and this has obvious consequences and i feel for any genuine folks trying to register.

But, there's not a lot more i can do, as Andy has mentioned, no spammers (and genuine registrants) gain access to any part of the forum without being fully authorised, all they get to see is the forum headers, any attempt to browse the forums are met with an error page until authorised.

Yeah, its all good as they aint authorised!

Do you know whats causing it? Is it actualy someone registering accounts? Or is it possibly bots?

A bit of both. A real idiot/person registers then hands the registration on to bots to cause havoc. But as the registrations don't get through, no bots are doing any damage.

I see, thats not to bad then i suppose, as long as they don't start attempting any DoS attacks with the bots then no damage is being caused, just annoyance!

could this have been instigated by a Banned member?

I've got one in mind...

now now - lets not have any conspiracy theories... :shut up:;)

to be honest Jonny, this looks like a world wide problem at the moment with vbulletin forums.. They seem to be specifically targetted... :frown::frown:

we will continue to manage it again, just feel for those trying to register when one of us is not logged on.

I've got one in mind...I can confirm that no banned member has tried to register again :frown:

As Craig has mentioned, NMS was not the only site to be targeted, seemingly a flaw in the vBulletin software had been exploited, but, depending on how registrations were accepted by the forum owners decided on whether they could be hacked or not.
Happy to confirm that NMS didn't suffer from this flaw :thumbs up:

We had two dodgy registrations last week on NorthernMINI, both accounts were deleted and the IP Addresses blocked. Mind you we still get two dodgy characters posting from time to time, one called Gismo and the other Andy P ;)
