Which is the best trim restorer ?

My mini has the oe mudflaps which are showing signs of fading on the plastic (I am very disappointed !) I tried a specialist plastic restorer product but after a few days the fading re-appears.
Black wow(who in the UK supplies this?) is a product I have heard a lot about on various forums. Is this the best product to buy? as I don't want to waste time and money on other stuff that does not do the job (my back to black spraying days are long gone!)

All advice appreciated, Ag.

I use black wow on my R53 arches. It does a good job providing your black trim is completely stripped of all dirt, contaminants, wax, oils, polishes etc before application. Otherwise it just doesn't seem to apply properly.

Others will no doubt be along to confirm BW is a great product. I've had trouble with it, but like I say, providing you keep to the above it should do the job for you.

PS. Moved thread to car care forum.:thumbs up:

Damn straight. Easy to use and the trim looks amazing, restored to its original black and the rain beads and runs ! Saved me £20 as I was going to buy some black wow, I had a £5 halfords voucher so the autoglym only cost me 99p. lol

Morrisons have mer polish on special just now. A friend recommends it and has been using it for years. I'm sure I remember seeing a guy at the Barra's (Barrowlands market for those non-Glaswegians) demonstrating mer polish on a car bonnet and motorbike petrol tank ! must be going back a good few years.

I use the Autoglym bumper care on our R56 'cos it has the Diamondbrite protection on it. The Diamondbrite is not on the arches but each time we do the monthly conserver treatment it runs off the metal work onto the arches and if we have black wow there it makes a mess of it. So for the R56, Autoglym it is. Actually, I treat the arches with ground nut oil, wipe that clean, then apply Autoglym and it leaves the arches looking smashing.:thumbs up::cool:

Try putting the autoglym stuff into a bucket of hot water for 10 mins before you apply it. It makes it nice and runny and much easier to apply. Try it. It works. Honest. A handy tip I got from Mrs ScottisDoop.:thumbs up::yes nod:

Mer.... Haven't used that since I was a teenager with my first car. It's just a mediocre polish, if I'm not mistaken. Much better products out there for polishing your car with. Unless you want to rub tar on the paint work or set fire to the paint work. If the guy in the Barra's is anything like the usual salesmen of Mer that's what he'll be demonstrating.:frown:

Not that extreme from what I can remember, going back a good few years though. He did have a microphone which was held to his chest by a coat- hanger moulded into a stand which allowed him to be "hands free" :D
The autoglym seems to have been quite effective, some other posts say it just masks the problem though, just don't know what to believe ! looks good just now. If it does'nt last I'll try Black wow.

The water is still beading nicely on my cooper at the moment so no hurry to buy polish yet but post your recommendations to give me some ideas.

About a week passed and the fading has re-appeared s***te !
I am buying some Black Wow as this sounds like the best product to restore ty arches, even though Autoglym Bumper Care said it would 'restore'
How do I go about stripping the Autoglym off and cleaning the arches ready for the Black Wow. I want to make sure I do the right prep. work before applying the Black Wow.

Thanks in advance, Ag ;)

Hi,

the easiest way to take off the bumper care is some tar and glue remover (or thats what I have used and it worked a treat). After that give the car a good wash.

Then you should have a good base for your black wow.. ;) I am not a fan of it and think it is cheaper to replace the plastic every 3 years than buy it... :yes nod::thumbs up:

Hope this helps.. :thumbs up:

I was thinking 50 alcohol/ 50 water mix

Replacing the plastic seems a bit extreme, though I thought about it. What costs are involved ?

I'd bought Autoglym stuff about four years ago, used it maybe once but didnt really notice much of a difference. 140,000 miles later I decided to give specy a special treat and came across it while hunting out various polishes etc. Gave it a try and I was hugely impressed by the finish. I now realise why of course I didnt see any difference before - car was new and immaculate. Wasn't until I used the autoglym that I realised how tatty the bumpers were. This week the roads have been a bit mucky but after spending Sunday giving him a polish, wax and finish with Autglym gloss protection the paintwork, bumpers and wheels are just beginning to gather some very light dirt. While other stuff gives a great shine I've not come across anything that can throw off winter dirt like the autoglym. Was seriously impressed with it. Defo a 10/10 from me.

I was just about to give up and buy some Black wow when I visited Andrew Watts and got chatting to a very helpful assistant who recommended that I needed to strip the trim first prior to applying the bumper care. He suggested Autoglym Tar Remover. It took about 30 mins to go round the exterior trim and its the best fiver I've spent for a while. I applied the Autoglym Bumper Care a few weeks ago and the trim still looks like new ! Happy happy joy joy.:D

That's a handy tip. Have the tar remover in the garage but cant remember ever using it. My bumpers and mudflaps look amazing with the Autoglym. Really amazed at the difference it made to them.

Meguiars - All season dressing is pretty good when its applied but when it rains gets water marks. I personally dont use anything on my car seems to look good without it.
