Has anyone had any bad experiences as a result of having an induction kit fitted?:)

The only bad experience I've had with the Pipercross on my S is that I accelerate too fast away from roundabouts and people flash their lights and wave their fists at me!!! Dare I ask why you want to know?

....errr yes... well that's not quite the type of problem I was thinking about. I was thinking mechanical problems but there you go!

I'd like to add that the best bit about the induction kit is that when you want to drive gently or go on a long motorway drive it is not heard at all.

would fitting something like that damage my warranty in any way?

fitting an induction kit will void your warranty only if you let them know! just replace the standard air box when your car goes into the garage

I was told my warranty wouldnt be affected, but they're so easy to change anyway!

I got my Pipercross Viper kit today! Looks magic but I am sh***ing myself about trying to fit it! I bought it secondhand and i am not 100% positive that all the fittings are present! Then I look at it again and there seems to be too many fittings! All the main bits are their and in perfect knick but I'm b***ered if I can work out where all the brackets and bolts go!! I'm totally kack handed at things like this! Does anyone have any experience they would like to share of fitting one of these to a Cooper??

Gary - what about the guy you bought it off - is he any help?

GAJ

He described how it all fitted together and it made perfect sense then. However when I approch the car alone with tools it all seems very different!

I know - I crapped out of it too!:D Well that and a lack of tools...

GAJ

Yes - the lack of tools is a problem for me too - I will have to visit Halfords again I think. I was looking at the clip around the hose fitted to the standard airbox and unfortunately it's not a normal jubilee clip and I have absolutely no idea how to remove it! That is how far I have got! I don't know if a special tool is needed. I dont want to damage anything as the standard box will have to be replaced at service time. Any ideas??

The pipercross for the s was a straight swap for the big clumsy box!! But yet again, John will be the man with the know how!:)

All thats needed is a 10mm socket for the two bolts and a small screwdriver to prise the clip open and thats it.

then remove the old airbox :)

Right - I'm going to go for it this afternoon! I finish work at 12 then the new filter is getting fitted!

I AM NOT GOING TO BOTTLE IT AS SOON AS I OPEN THE BONNET AGAIN!

Well I've done it - sort of! The old box has been removed and the new filter fitted but I can't see any way of attaching the cold air feed to the front so it is just frawing ait from under the bonnet!! Sounds magic though! If anyone has any ideas of how to improve on what I have done (John!!) please let me know and I will give it a try. Photo's of the installed filter can be seen using the link below - hopefully!!

Well done GAJ (and so you should be:D)

If it was my car (and its not)I would modify the cold air intake that is there and try to link then together:D

John, that is what I was thinking but my plan is to refit the standard box when it goes back to the dealers - they said no mods or bye-bye warranty! So that rules out sawing a hole in the cold air intake. I think I might stick the Viper on good old eBay and buy a new induction kit which fits better! What would you recommend??

I recomend a holiday in Australia

Haha! When I get back from Oz what Induction kits do you recommend - Pipercross, K&N Typhoon??

My 2001 Cooper is running a Magnex staimless Cat-back system, which sounds great and livens up the performance a bit too - definately recommended to give your car real "Cooper Character".

As I was well happy, I fitted a Pipercross Cone type induction kit which was a fairly easy job, providing you have access to the proper sockets/spanners etc.

The noise in tandem with the Magnex was a mixture of Scooby, BDA Escort and TVR (probably OTT actually). However, I thought that the car was a bit "flat", and wasn't going as well as before. At first I wasn't sure, but after a week or so I was. I'm certain it was down on power.
Took P/X back off and re-fitted airbox - Result - runs like a dream again.

Could it be that the combination with the Magnex is the problem? Was it running too lean with all the extra air going in? I thought it would work, but it was too bloody loud and slower!!!! Right Tech-heads, any ideas? I'm sticking with the Magnex for now and leaving the OE filter as it is. Also, Cooper people, Check "evo" mag's recent test of 11 MINIS. Interesting reading.....

Was it a PX Viper or the standard cone filter?

ELFMAN
13th October 2003, 02:12 AM
It was the standard foam cone type

GAJ

Mmmm. Dunno then!

Ive got the same problem.
Not sure, but when i put on a Pipercross for a shot, a few weeks back, it seemed to run OK, and the noise was great,......but going back to the standard airbox, the car definatley feels quicker again.

any help about here for this problem?,.....i too thought that maybe the mixture had gone lean, but i dont know.

Thanks Tony, I thought I was going mental!!!!
Maybe a "Superchip" rolling set-up would fix this, but to be honest, I don't know if it's really worth the outlay. My Cooper's running great back on the OE filter. Get a Magnex and then leave it alone.
