Took it upon myself to split my headlights, sand them down and paint them satin black.
What i thought would have took an hour, Actually took 4 hours, 3 headlights and a stab in the wrist from a burning hot stanley knife.
But, Got it done and happy with them...

Looks amazing. I would like to get mine darkened, although i was thinking of buying ones cause am lazy. Still as good in the dark? Still Legal?

Thanks.
I dont think you can buy them off the shelf other than the Angel eye one's which i thought looked too boy racer-ish to be honest so i done these myself.
Its a nightmare though and wouldnt do it again, Takes a lot of patience that i just havent got.:yes nod:
Exact same in the dark as the bit thats painted is cosmetic only and not functional, Same with the Legal issue, Its only cosmetic and not affecting anything. I had my MOT today funnily enough and it was fine. BMW too.

Nice one for doing the Joey Mod!!! I too want to do it but think it might look too dark with my black wheels, tints etc.
My mate did this to his honda and looked like a bit of a hard job. good on ya for getting it done like!
LOL at last pic

This headlight darkened approach is appealing to me, i read a while ago that folks were doing it on MINI2.
To save me trawling their site  what is involved, ie, what type paint, how long do you cook for and on what gas setting  :D

I read about it but couldnt be bothered and then my girlfriend mentioned it would look good with the black roof and mirrors, So i had to do it lol.
I used Satin Black plastics paint from halfords with a very light coat of lacquer to protect it.
Put the unit in a pre heated oven for a minute or so and keep checking the glue softening. I pre heated it to 200 then placed the unit in for around 3 minutes , took it out and prised it apart , Put it in again and kept going til it came off.
Remove bulbs etc before doing it though and bearing in mind that it can melt so try it on a lower temp if not confident.
Then you need to remove the inner part and paint it.
To put it back together i removed all of the original glue. Som people re-use it but i decided to put on fresh extra strong window adhesive to ensure it was water tight.
Relatively straight forward process but is a pain in the arse and not very easy to split.
