Great aircraft both of them.

Would you believe me that the F22 just isn't in the same league as the Typhoon when it comes to manoeuvrebility?

I've been reading a couple of articles in Airforces Monthly with rumours from pilots "in the know" and apparently as the F22 has had so much of it's design effort towards stealth characteristics it has lost out quite a bit in "flyability". I'll look out the mag and find exactly what it says. It even makes the SU-27 look ordinary in a dogfight.

great pics:thumbs up: be interested in what you find out. It's more Allan that has the interest in this type of stuff but I do like seeing them in flight.

Allan has flown in the Tornado and Harrier VTOL. He's been up to mach1.6 in the Tornado he says he liked it:eyes up:

It all makes sense now:yes nod: I wondered why he was so relaxed with you at the helm:D

That reminds me of a story I read a while back about a Typhoon. It was flying about down south when the pilot spotted to US F-15s tooling along, so he decided to have some fun with them (with permission obviously ;)) Anyway, he jumped them, and over the next 15 mins of mock dogfighting he could have shot them both down several times, while the two eagles never got near enough for a solution once! :D:D

Still my favourites ever:

Or the F-4 phantom, Vulcan..
Well, from the jet era anyway.. don't get me started, this could end up being one of the biggest threads ever!! ;)

Oh, and if anyone out there has an Xbox (or I think PS3 now) and is into planes in any way at all, then you *HAVE* to buy Ace Combat 6, it's awesome! I've even been online with it, and shot down some Americans in my Typhoon ;)

I'll get the mags out tonight and copy what they have written. Allan is luckier than I am. I spent 10 years as an engineer on a Tornado F3 squadron and never got a trip!

BTW, did anyone see the F3 "diamond 9" today to commemorate the disbanding of 56 Sqn? I think they were leaving Leuchars, heading north to Aberdeen, then Kinloss, then home.

10:15 - Forth bridges, Leith Docks & Britannia (10:17) then skirting round Edinburgh, passing Redford Barracks (10:25) and Edinburgh Airport.
They will fly over the bridges again (10:26) on their way to Scone airport
(10:30) before turning back to fly down the Tay to Dundee (10:35).
They then head north over Condor (10:37), Aberdeen (10:40) and on to RAF Lossiemouth (10:45) and RAF Kinloss (10:47).
They then return to Leuchars for a final fly past at 11am.

aye he done a lot of stuff. He's an Army Brat. His Grand Father, Father then him and his brothers and sisters all served.

He told me to tell you his trip in the Tornado was from RAF Wittering with Flt Com Carnaza. It's going back a good few years now but a couple of Tornados were at the base for 4 weeks and he manage to get up in one.

As much as that was a great experience for him he says much preferred the Helicopters in particular the Links and the Gazelle hanging out of them holding on to a LMG. Boys and big toys:yawn:

The best ever looking plane in my opinion is the Vulcan bomber. Since I was a small boy I have loved going to East fortune air museum to stand and look atthe Vulcan.
I am over the moon that the restoration team have got a Vulcan XH558 flying again.

Aye, I guess it's all to do with in the right place at the right time. Hangin out a chopper with a gun sounds like a good way to pass your day. My mate is a Air Loadie on Chinooks and has to "test fire" his door minigun on a daily basis in Iraq and Afghanistan. That would be a hoot.

Here's the letter I was speaking about earlier. From a reader in Airforces Monthly Jan 2008. The only thing I have any reason to doubt is that the pilots were "relatively inexperienced". I would imagine that any pilots that are currently flying Typhoons will be extremely experienced.

"EUROFIGHTER SLAYS ‘EM!

I REMEMBER reading around two years ago about the prowess of Eurofighter over other aircraft. Well, this anecdote will probably ‘get out’ one day and concerns the visit to these shores in July (see Deadly Charmers, September 2007, p60-63) of Indian Air force Su-30s. The MoD said that it would not be putting Typhoons up against them as a one-on-one fight. This is general knowledge. However – it did happen and there is a head up display video to prove it. I don’t know how it came about – probably during some exercise.
Anyway, two relatively inexperienced Typhoon pilots returned with big grins on their faces. The Sukhois were ‘toasted’. All the Su-30’s air display antics came to nought – the Typhoons proved too nimble and too powerfulfor the Russian aircraft. The Typhoons were not ‘clean’ either. You can check with the MoD, but you probably already know the kind of answer you’ll get! (We did, and they wouldn’t – Editor)
The original article resulted in several letters of response about the Typhoon versus the F-22. This cannot be confirmed or admitted officially, but during Typhoon’s visit to the USA in 2005, both aircraft were pitted against each other (unofficially, you understand). The F-22 could not be seen by the Typhoon pilot, but his electronic counter measures showed him that it was being ‘painted’ by his opponent. The Typhoon took appropriate ‘measures’ using self defensive aids. But when it came to one-on-one combat, the Typhoon did the same kind of job as it did with the Sukhois. The F-22s could not ‘handle’ the Typhoon close in and the Yanks were shocked!
It did not all go the Typhoon’s way on this occasion but it was a sobering encounter for the Americans. Remember, on the F-22 much was sacrificed in terms of ‘fighter performance’ for stealth.
The first part of this letter, regarding the Sukhois, I have from first hand experience, though the second part – about the F-22s – has come to me through the Typhoon grapevine. Fascinating isn’t it? The Typhoon does appaear to be a truly formidable machine – a machine feared by other ‘operators’.
