View Full Version : NMS Needs A Logo
Gismo
16th April 2008, 07:15 AM
To all you graphically minded folks, i'm looking for a dedicated NMS logo that can fit onto dedicated NMS merchandise, including hats, t-shirt's, fleeces and jackets etc
I don't have the software or the skill :o to show what i have in mind for my suggestion, so, was hoping that someone could make something up for me :thumbs up:
I'm open to any member's suggestion, the logo is for NMS not me and we can vote on the designs to suit the majority.
I haven't decided on what type of merchandise i will offer, but, i don't intend to get cheap stuff but not too expensive either, i have a few ideas in mind but that can come later.
So, to my idea, a circular design with the website around the outer edge enclosed in a smaller circle.
Inside that i would like a cartoon type mini on a saltire background :thumbs up:
If anyone could do something for me there ?
Try and limit the colours to 2 or 3 max, the start up costs are very expensive with 3 colours.
So, if you're keen, get graphical :D

I think he means the Monte Carlo style plate that is commonly used on the run plates.
I used to have this on my first mini in the early days of mini2

And if you're looking for merchandise ideas you could insert a username in the bit where service is and flog them as car graphics.

I wonder though if the set up costs would allow the username to change or if a new design is required for each username

The username ones could be a premium sticker with non username ones as a cheaper option.

Shame, I'd buy one, I thought they'd help to advertise the site. Perhaps one of the sponsors could do a deal where by they pay a percentage of the profits to the site........
Just a thought, believe me they don't happen very often

I think that logo is a bit cheesy TBH, and come to think of it my suggestion is pretty dire as well as far a logo is concerned. You need something striking and I don't see why it has to include something as obvious as saltire or a MINI.

well I was thinking more like have the logo and then having the word newminiscotland running under the logo and not within the logo.
It's seems to me we already have our "brand" colours if you like.
The grey white and purple as we can all see above us at the top of the page.
We ought to keep this as it's been there since the site was launched.
or maybe BS is wanting to rebrand the site???
Anyway I think we just need to think about a logo and not the words. It does need a Scottish theme and a Mini it just how do we put them together remebering this is new mini so we want to keep it modern and fresh. AIMHO.
Scottie
18th April 2008, 11:11 AM
right I've thought about it.
I would use this
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/scottiecoop/images.jpg the same idea as what is already on the jackets that alot of us have.
I would have the word MINI in our branded colours just an idea.??
I would have name newminiscotland running underneath the logo defo in our branded colours.
And I would have a wee scottishflag running slightly slanted behind but to the top of one of the wings of the mini badge they way you see a bit either side of the flag.
or instead of MINI in the centre of the badge you could have NMS in the grey purple and white colours.
anyone understand what I'm saying

h'mm well I did think about that. I think if you change something however small then you will be ok. i.e. the MINI to NMS put an extra line/indent in the wings. and extra line round the centre badge. Someone may be bale to say for sure.

A couple of simple examples. Bearing in mind when re-branding it's often best to just make vry simply changes to an existing recognisable brand.
Also, take into account that simple is best when embroidering logo's onto clothing. The more colours used the more expensive it gets and the more complex the logo looks the more difficult it is to do it justice.
http://www.reachercreatures.com/MINI/nms_logo.jpg
http://www.reachercreatures.com/MINI/nms_logo2.jpg
The bottom logo has a fairly harsh black drop shadow and is effectively 4 colours so i would suggest this would only be any good for the web site and printed documents. The top logo has three colours, but would work just as well against any other background colour, be it a navy polo shirt or a black baseball cap. You would just loose the purple background and it becomes 2 colours.

So far i'm liking VB's outline the best :) the monte carlo stylee
I'm leaning towards having either
NEWMINISCOTLAND or NEWMINISCOTLAND.CO.UK
Along the bottom
Then, a side on view of a MINI in the arched section, thanks to John for that one.....................or
Maybe we can look into having user names in the arch section as well as the MINI, but, this carries a cost which i'm working on :thumbs up:
So, anyone be able to make that up  gotta remember, that this logo will most likely be embroidered on, not a patch and as such the words can't be too wide as it would look silly on the breast section of a T-Shirt.
I'm still open to suggestions :)

Baz, excellent stuff, so, drop the username out the logo, move the car back up a tad, i'm not so sure of the Est 2003 ;) would need to see it if there is enough room once the car is up higher :D in fact, can you show it without the Est 2003 and leave just enough room so that the outside of the design does not touch the outer edge

It looks dated as i think BS wants to hold onto the heritage of the old mini which i dont think is a bad thing. The racing plate design is always going to convey a retro look.

Baz I think what you've done looks excellent.:thumbs up: I do like the look of the monte carlo badge look. However, I really don't think that how the "new" NMS should be presented - with an old style logo?
Like Niknax says this is NEWminiscotland, and we even have a NEW owner and the site is benefiting from much more attention now than it's had for a long time. No disrespect to Calum, he was busy beyond recognition, but Alan is clearly hands-on, and the time is right for a new image, but do we really want to go backwards -in time - with that look?

Remember, this is a logo that is to fit on the breast of any merchandise, or the front of a cap.
I'm not wanting a logo that simply takes over the whole of the breast plate on a top.
I want discreet and visible to catch the eye, but able to be embroidered.
I will be retaining the colours that make up NMS, white, silver and purple.
Bazthemod
20th April 2008, 12:18 PM
I'll try some slicker and contemp designs.
Can we thrash some ideas around about what the main icons or symbols should be? Having a open brief doesnt help much lol as you need to focus on something.
Are we going for performance car magazine stylee... how lary do we wanna get and what do we want to convey?
Gismo
20th April 2008, 12:53 PM
I'll try some slicker and contemp designsWell, we almost had the design in place :ragin: :D
Sadly, my graphic designing skills are as good as my car washing skills :hand:
I'm trying not to say, this is my site and i'll go with what i want, but, we have to factor the simple ways to convey this to a t-shirt or jacket.
We can't have something that is too intricate with loads of colours, this is an embroidery only design, not an iron on graphic or print.
NMS is synonymous with a black background, white, silver and purple lettering, hence the text being what it is. No matter how "new" the site is, the logo at the top of the page will be there for a long time to come, so, i wanted to encorporate that into the design.
The ability to purvery a mini or graphic of a car into the design surely sets the logo up to make us stand for what we are?
When i posted this, i had an idea, i simply typed it out and someone was able to put it into a graphic, so, if anyone else has an idea, jot it down and let's see if someone can do somehting with it :thumbs up:

Well, we almost had the design in place :ragin: :D
The design is still there :D i'll do some other stuff then if anybody else can try things we can just collate them together, you can pick the ones that suit the requirements, then they can go to a poll. Otherwise we could go round in circles for weeks.
Im by no means a graphic designer i just study computer arts and have an interest in graphic/web design :)

NMS is synonymous with a black background, white, silver and purple lettering, hence the text being what it is. No matter how "new" the site is, the logo at the top of the page will be there for a long time to come, so, i wanted to encorporate that into the design
I'd say you have answered your own questions there BS. Just have the name of the site in the site colours and be done with it. At the end of the day the more simple it is the cheaper the cost will be.
People will buy it anyway as long as your garments are good and not some cheap China tat.

John's one has nice clean lines not too fussy. Got a nice patriotic touch with the Saltire - since it is a Scottish club:thumbs up: Would also make a cool window sticker.
I think (ouch!) I've got to go with Andy's last ones coz I like the fun element of the cartoon mini though think cooper or S should be optional otherwise not S that's discrimination:hand: Like the option to personalise it too.

Ryan, and others :)
It's a very fine line between getting a logo and producing something that can be turned into an NMS sticker.
The stickers already exist and i have vast quantities of them that i do not intend changing :hand: the original stickers fit very well and do exactly what is required, ie, promote the site in a non obtrusive way.
Which leads me to the point, just about any idea can be laid down and put onto a sticker, cost is a major factor in mass producing, but, the more complex it gets then obviously the prices rise.
So, if you're looking to turn your idea into a sticker by all means have a word with Carlo, our graphics sponsor :thumbs up:

It'll always be hard to accomodate everyone, think of the scenario, someone owns a cooper, or a ONE and buys an S, or, vice versa, they already have a cooper, or ONE styled logo
Anyway, if Andy's logo is adopted, or any one that shows either an S or a plain bonnet, i will investigate the cost of each layout and offer that, if that's what folks want.

This wasn't an easy decision to make and i'd just like to thank everyone for their input and votes.
It's quite obvious i didn't simply pick the one with the most votes and there are several reasons for that.
Some of which are due to cost, copyright and embroidering issues and ensuring that everyone is catered for.
I also didn't want to have to set up several master designs and found this to be the best compromise.
As it stands, the new logo's will be on any future NMS merchandise as per the members request, be it an S or non S design.
Other embroidery can still be applied, like usernames on the sleeve, or, whatever, however, these will carry extra cost at the members expense, but, thought to be in the region of £1 - £1.50.
