Help! We are about to get a second dog to go with our existing, spoilt, not very well dog socialised, 6 yo, male Border Collie. The new pup also a Border Collie is a girl.
I was wondering if anyone had any experience of introducing the new dog, we've already decided that: -
*it'll be a gradual introduction
*she won't be allowed to pester him
*he'll get more attention than the new puppy
*we won't leave them alone together for at least a month maybe longer
But, is it a difficult thing to do? Any advice on how to get Elliott and Freya together will be welcome.

Oh yes when we got Molly and had to introduce her to a 3 male dog home.
It was James our other Collie that we thought was going to be the problem or so we thought but after a couple of weeks everything sorted itself out.
Dogs are not stupid as I know you know owning a Collie and they treat pups different your worrying over nothing trust me. You will be able to leave them together the very first night.
The only thing is when your making a fuss over Collie Senior make sure Collie Junior is out the road.

VB, Fi's pretty well hit the mark. With dog's I doubt you'll have much of a territorial problem. Maybe a bit of growling at first, and a wee bit of resentment, but before long they'll be playing away together.;)
One thing I would advise... introduce them to each other in a park - with both dogs on a lead. Let them have a good sniff around each other, and they will probably just want to play together there and then. Then when you take the pup home it's almost like "Cool, my new friend is coming home with us." Rather than... "WTF is that scrawny bandy legged little sh** doing in MY HOME?!"
Now, if it were cats you were introducing..... different story.
We brought a wee Birman cat called Sully into our household when our other cat Jinxie was 3 years old. That was two years ago. Jinxie has just forgiven us.
Lots of hissing and spitting and resentment. Even after months, she would walk through the living room and not look at us. You could see her saying "That's fine, I'm off to bed, I'll leave you to play with your new best friend. You don't need me any more. NOBODY LOVES ME ANYMORE, YOU ALL HATE ME. AAARRRGGGGHHHHH MMmmeeeooooowwww".:(
In all honestly, although I jest with the cats it took a good 6 months before Jinxie would talk to us again, a good 6 months after that before she would be close to Sully and a good 6 months again before she would happily play with him. And the irony here is that we got HIM for company for HER while we were at work!
About 8 years ago we introduced Neil's Collie (she was 1 or 2 at the time) to Minstral our 6 year old Samoyed dog in a play park. They had met a couple of times in the cinema and didn't see eye to eye. So we took them to a park, let them play it out and have been madly in love ever since.
Let us know how you get on. And like when folks get a new MINI - we want PICS!!!!

Cheers for the advice guys. We can't do the neutral ground introduction as she's only eight weeks and hasn't had her vaccinations yet.
However, Elliott has already been promoted with his chair moved closer to the main sofa. Freya's pen will go where his chair used to be so we can get her out doors quickly, house training ;)

we always do the introduction part in our garden / lawn bit.
You'll be fine.
Post the pics when she is home

Afraid I don't know anything of much relevance on this topic VB, but I just wanted to wish you the best of luck with your new arrival ;)
