my friend has an r56 mini cooper and it has developed a massive leak in the passenger side rear footwell to the extent of him having to remove the water by the cupload
has anyone else encountered this problem

thats something neither of my R56's suffered from. My guess would be the seal on the passenger side window. My window on the drivers side needed adjusting as there was quite a gap. Maybe check that, but I would book it into the dealership to get looked at asap.. Don't want the carpet smelling. :(

Isnt that where the heater matrix is too?
Might be worth keeping a keen eye on engine coolant.

Heater matrix would leak on the front footwell. This is the rear. ;)

Has it got a sunroof ?...heard of the drain tubes blocking and that causing leaks inside cars (though never on R56's).

First I have heard of R56 leaks.
Not seen it mentioned on MINI2 or NAM.

it's usually the door aperture seal we usually bring them in for the day take the seat out and nd the inner sill trim then sit on water test for a few hours and it pools on top of the seal and drips in... if it's an r56 surely it's warranty? best getting it in and fixed by the dealer tbh
