Mac Advice needed

The superdrive in my Imac (Intel) has failed, it won't write to CDs/DVDs. Rather than paying to have the drive replaced I wanted to get an external drive. I was just going to buy a USB one but when a looked none mentioned that they were compatible with Macs.

My question, do I need a special Mac one or will any PC USB one do?????

Anyone should do, have a look at www.apple.com/uk store, as those will def work with your Mac then shop around for best price.

Might be worth while replacing your internal one though as I think its just a standard laptop sized drive, and is easy to fit.

Wouldn't know were to start with taking the Imac apart, plus it will still read at the moment. The apple store is offline at the moment but the cheapest they had was £80 and PC world have an LG one for £40 which I can collect on my way home.

I've just had the super drive in my Macboook Pro replaced under warranty. Even out with warranty, it wouldn't have been a costly repair. I used a local authorised repair centre (CMYK in Newtongrange). Handed in on Christmas Eve and picked up on Friday 28th:)

I was using an external USB DVD drive as a temporary measure without any problems. It recognised the drive automatically.

Replacing drive in Macs is a pretty simple process. I've had the guts of my original iMac out on numerous occasions without any problems - replacement drives, memory etc.

I too have had my Superdrive replaced in my macbook pro under warranty. Actually they had to eventually replace my whole machine because a certain Scottish company that were repairing macs in Scotland trashed my laptop. Thankfully...Apple now do their own repairs in Scotland.

The optical drive seems to be the weak link in the chain when it comes to macs. But...my new machine has a LG drive instead of a Mat****a drive....and I really feel that the LG will last.

I also have an external LG DVD-rewriter and it works perfectly with Mac or PC. Cost £35.00 plus £15.00 for a external USB case.

It's nightmare having a Mac and not having to search for the drivers everytime you add something new, really annoying how they just work! :p

I've got both Mac and PC, never use the PC anymore. Why is that? Because I want to spend time on the computer doing stuff I want to rather than 'fine-tuning'.

I'll pick up an external drive and leave the repair until I find a local repair specialist who can sort it.

I know what I prefer too. I don't have a Mac laptop at the moment and spend the majority of my time using windaes. Believe me - Macs offer a much better experience.

I actually got the drive going again. Can't understand why but I have two batches of discs CDR that the drive doesn't like. Both X52 one Tesco's own brand, the other Kodak.

Don't know if it makes a difference that you are using a Mac or not Paul, but we use Tesco's DVD-r's all the time in the cinema. Lindsay (my Assistant Manager) creates a movie trailer DVD from trailers downloadable from official sites on t'internet, and we play it on Plasma screens around the cinema. We've had lots of trouble with the latest batch of DVD-r's from Tesco's.

Just thought I'd share.
