Hey was just wondering, going to be needing new tyres soon and im getting fed up with the dunlop sp9000 runflats in all aspects.

Going to go for non runflats and im just wondering what you lot would suggest for all round performance in all weathers, 205x45 R17 im pretty sure is the size im after.

Goodyear Eagle F1's. I've been using these for a few years and they are excellent.

Ive been hearing good things about these (including an illegal bad batch that suppliers have unknowingly been taking stock of), How are they in the wet?

Looked at Michelin Pilot Sports, Toyo Proxes T1-R's and Eagle F1's none come in the right size :( (According to the websites i found that is)

Black Circles have them

i checked on that only gave me pirelli and dunlops lol maybe im just a spanner ah i see, i was selecting speed rating V thats why it was only showing me those. The toyos are W rated but it has (reinforced) in brackets, does that mean they are runflats?

THey are classed as mid-range but they're the best IMHO

I have 215/40 ZR17 on mine.

What wheels have you got? Mine are the R99's and im assuming it must be 205 and 45 as thats what menzies fitted when supplied?

Craig

you can also fix 205/40/17 as I have had them before... I vote for the Toyo's as I have them on my 18's and they are great....

All of the traffic cars at work run on Goodyear Eagle F1's and they say they are the only tyres they would use...:D:D:D I don't like them as all 4 of mine de-laminated last year and it cost me a small fortune to replace them... :disapprove:

Sweeney

Wouldn't that mean the wheels are rotating faster than they are meant to be so my speedomoter etc would be out of sync?

What happens when they de-laminate?

re the first question, only marginally by about 1 - 3mph at motorway speeds..

2 - it basically means that the tyre is separating from the rest of the rim and will eventually fall apart and you will most probably crash...

How do you spot this? Is it like cracks/tears/rips round the edge of the tyre? If so 2 of mine are doing that, one front and one rear...

Craig
2nd May 2007, 06:15 AM
mine was cracks going across the tread from inside to outside (approx 2 inches). Only noticed it when I took them off at the end of the summer last year.. :(

Sweeney

Hmm will need to get a proper look i think then eh? It seems to be just along the outer edge of the tread, I just assumed they were doing that cause they are off camber out of alignment and needing tracked :clown:

Just so you know, I'm sure you can get them at the right size as I've got pilot sport 2s on the the 3 series - they come up to 245/45/17 as that's what's on mine ;) pricey though, but I've found them great on the BMW.

I had pilot sports on the Brabus, they aren't a patch on the toyo especially in the wet

Goodyear F1 GSD - 215/40 zr17s fit fine - were fabulous in wet or dry and lasted me about 20k miles

I've got 18's, but I guess the tread pattern etc is the same -

I had Yoko's all round, brilliant apart from the wet, where they are useless. Also tramline a wee bit.

Put Toyo's on the front (still got Yoko's on the back). Absolutely superb, I get massive oversteer in the wet now, its brilliant :D

The only downside I've noticed with the Toyo's is a slight loss in steering feel compared with the Yoko's. Other than that, brilliant. They even seem to last longer, despite my driving :p

Only thing to watch out for on the Toyo's is the softer sidewalls, under hard cornering they can feel like the tyres folding on itself, I had Goodyear Eagle F1s on my cooper, they were awesome :D

Another vote for Toyo Proxes T1-R's , thats what i run on my leon :), really good.
In fact im getting two new ones fitted tomorrow.
Bought them from my tyres, 225/45/17s though

I am looking into getting new tyres for my S too. The tyres I'm looking at are the Eagle F1 gsd3 (215/45/17 or the dunlop sp sportmaxx (205/45/17). I did think about getting the toyos, but this thread put me off them.

Coming close to needing to replace the fronts now and ive looked into it with help from others, best option (to suit me) seems to be using the 215x45 R17 eagle f1's, they will only be a fraction out on the speedo much less than 205x40 would be though... Only question is, as the wheel is meant to have 205's on it, what side effects would there be from running the wider 215's on it? :o

I noticed there was slightly less feel through the steering, not major though. I noticed the ride was slightly more forgiving though. Oh, the back and sides will get dirtier though, well my MINI did after I changed.

There's very little difference in grip though.

Sweeney

I'd imagine if any difference in grip it'd be for the better as its a wider surface area. Lack of feel i dunno if i could live with that, would rather a wee bit more as it is lol
