Anyone have any idea what the potential damage would be if an Audi TDI engine has been run on the wrong type of oil for the last 10k miles.

I can't prove it and I'm not 100% certain but I think when the A2 was last serviced the garage who we bought the car off didn't use the right type of oil. VAG TDI need special oils or so they say, if worse case they used the wrong oil how much damage will have been done and will there be any signs?

to answer one of your queries, your right the oil is special for all VAG TDI engines as my dad had a passat TDI 130 and now has a TDI Alhambra (SEAT) and it's the same oil for both..

to be honest, it must all be down to the viscosity of the oil and not being an engineer I don't know what damage it would do.. No VAG forums to tell you this info ?

Just wondering if anyone on here knew, there's a few mechanics knocking about.

Contact Star Performance in Kirkcaldy. They are VW/Audi specialists. I have used them for years for servicing and modifications. The owner is Jimmy Curley.

I'm not sure was it a fully synthetic oil or semi. viscosity is all about operating temperatures i.e 0 - 30 w or 5 -40W I take it from that this is what temp this oil will operate between not sure.

I'm not sure what oil they put in it, it might have been the right one. However it was serviced by a Renault garage, not VW, what are the chances they stuck in what they had rather than get the special Vdub oil. Pretty high chance I reckon. Probably an idea to off load it just in case

I won't loose on it as we got it for less than book price.........

You know mate...I'm beginning to think you're a bit obsessed about the cost of cars! :)

I don't think the wrong oil will do too much damage to be honest. It' obviously not ideal to have the wrong oil in but it's not going to do anything catastrophic I wouldn't have thought.
