it seems a bit 'tappety'. Oil level is below 'mid' , has this got anything to do with it ? Third service (do they even change the oil at this service?) is due 3000 odd miles , should I just wait or can I do something now ?

You could top your oil up. Wouldn't wait for the service. I used to be able to tell when my Vauxhall Nova was low on oil just from the "tappety" sound from the engine. Not saying this is defo whats causing the noise, but it would probably rule it out/in.

your oil should not be a problem as the viscosity in synthetic oils are fine. unless some dim wit has put in the wrong oil. synthetic oil should not really thicken in cold weather. Unless your oil pump is on the road out and not getting the oil up to the top of the engine.

anyway we have not really had that cold a weather yet.

I would top up the oil level -- if it still makes noise I would have the dealer look at it. If you do have a lifter / tappet going bad then let MINI pay for it.

If all else fails I would add some Lucas oil stabilizer or Marvel oil to the crank case and see if that solves the problem.

I had a old Mazda Miata and it would tap something terrible in the mornings - a half quart of Lucas with every oil change and it purred like a kitten -- still going with over 250K on the odo.

Good luck:cool:
